Tourism across Southern Europe has largely changed due to the pandemic. Hotels were already were already finding it hard to keep up with higher fuel bills and inflation, and now, a price increasedue to the Russia-Ukraine war will only make things worse!

Greece, like other tourism-dependent economies on the Mediterranean fringe is gradually witnessing recovery in visitor numbers this year after losing out considerably in the last two years. Similar to Spain, Portugal and Italy, tourism is a big employer, contributing considerably toward state revenue.

The upset of labor markets due to the pandemichas given rise to staffing shortages. Italian tourist officials admit that pandemic-era holidaying, putting stress on hygiene, sanitation and space, is a big challenge for its ageing infrastructure.

In the midst of this, a market for more modest, small-scale vacations is opening up. In Spain and Portugal, due to tourists unwilling to travel far is heighteningstays in rural areas in tents, campers or motorhomes. Industry and government officials in Greece have said that revenue will reach 80-90% of the record witnessed in 2019, when 33 million tourists fetched 18 billion euros in revenue.
