The International Camel Festival started in Bikaner on Sunday after around two month’s interruption failed to attract foreign and as domestic tourists. The festival is hosted by Rajasthan tourism department and district administration. However, the first day of the three-day long event proved to be unsuccessful, not meeting the expectations.

Locals suspected that Bikaner’s culture and heritage were not properly displayedin the event due to poor promotional efforts and substandard planning. Only locals visited the event, and that was not of much help to the local tourism industry.

Prajakta Roy, a domestic touristvisiting the festival said, “The aim of an international festival is to showcase local culture and heritage to tourists, particularly foreigners. It’s more like a community get together, like a country fair with contests, races, prizes and local folks from Bikaner. But the camel race was incredible.”

The Rajasthan tourism department and local administration had approached industrialists, tour operators and hoteliers for financial contributions; however, most of them rejected the proposal.

There were also accusations that the streets were dirty and hundreds of locals in Bikaner were taken aback, as the district administration changed the route of Heritage walk at the last minute.

An administrative officer involved in event organization said, “We have been ignored in the majority of the decision making process for the mega event, which is happening after a span of three years.”
