Global tourism witnessed a four percent upturn in 2021 compared to the year before, with a total of 415 million international trips.

However, international tourist arrivals (overnight visitors) were still 72 percent below the pre-pandemic levels, said the UNWTO.

2020 was the worst year on record for tourism, with international arrivals dropping by 73 percent.

The first 2022 issue of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer indicates that increasing rates of vaccination, along with simplification of travel restrictions due to increased cross-border coordination and protocolshave propelled travel demand.

International tourism made a comebackreasonably during the second half of 2021.The full impact of the Omicron variant and surge in Covid-19 cases is yet to be seen, said the UNWTO.

Recovery is slow and uneven around the world due to varying degrees of mobility restrictions, vaccination rates and traveler confidence.
